Profit Lost to Prophecy

Hope – George Frederic Watts (Painted in 1886)

A new year’s resolution worth considering: substituting the urge to prophesize with hoping.

. . .

Oft we play the part of prophet

And with predictive pronouncement profess,

Forthcoming fortune to inherit,

A richly furnished gem-laden chest!

.

Ape do we in hurried hustle,

Apes as unknowing and bafflingly daft,

Who proffer tips to best the bustle,

Instructing thus: “pay heed to our craft!”

.

Led astray by dark direction

Shade shackles with shadow and fetters us up.

For prophecy is firm selection –

A drink expected, when absent a cup.

.

Whine do we at spilt wine wasted

“O why must life be all trick and no treat?”

Tis cause our tongues already tasted,

A beverage now soaking our feet.

.

Solve we must this painful problem,

Escape the pit with this lowering rope!

The tackle’s strength it dawns upon them,

The ones who fasten their fists firm to hope.
